Singapore's three local universities are the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Management University (SMU)..

National University of Singapore (NUS) was established in 1905, and now is a comprehensive university that offers courses in multi-disciplines such as Sciences, Engineering, Technology, Law, Arts & Social Sciences and Medicine.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU), established in 1981, is set up for the post-secondary education and majors in research engineering & technology research. Since  incorporating the National Institute of Education (NIE), "the teacher’s college" has expanded to include accounting, business and communication programmes.

Singapore Management University (SMU), set up in 2000, is a publicly-funded private university, which focuses on business and management programmes.

International Universities
In addition to local universities, many world's leading foreign universities have also set a physical campus (institutes of higher learning) or have joint collaborations/programmes with the local.

Private institutions

There are many private educational institutions (PEI) in Singapore. These private schools provide courses, which are in much demand from local and international students. Private schools provide certificate, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels for various courses. Through joint-collaborations and partnerships with international universities,  private schools provide opportunities for students to achieve an affordable international certification.

In order to safeguard students’ interests and welfare as well as maintaining the quality and standards of private schools in Singapore, three key initiatives have been put in place. These are the CaseTrust for Education, EduTrust and Singapore Quality Class for Private Education Organizations (SQC-PEO).
